I don't have anything like WR's experience, but I have some. When I put my dad in hospice, he went into a nursing home for about 3 months. I spent a lot of time there visiting with him, and in the process I got to know quite a few of the old folks who were there. Of those who were lucid, every single one of them told me they wished they could just wake up dead, or words to that effect. Every one of them. This idea of prolonging life just for the sake of prolonging life is not just silly, it's cruel. Based on my limited experience, I'd say that most oldsters are afraid of dying, not of being dead. Given the state of current laws on such things, I'm an advocate of the "shotgun theory" to avoid interminable stays in nursing homes.
