According to the US Institute of Medicine’s 1999 Report: “Marijuana and Medicine: Assessing the Science Base,” “Millions of Americans have tried marijuana, but most are not regular users, … [and] few marijuana users become dependent on it.”68 In fact, less than 10 percent of marijuana users ever exhibit symptoms of dependence (as defined by the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-IV criteria.)69 By comparison 15 percent of alcohol users, 17 percent of cocaine users, and a whopping 32 percent of cigarette smokers statistically exhibit symptoms of drug dependence.70

The millions who have tried marijuana but dropped it aren't relevant to me. Also I'm not interested in some DSM criteria of "dependence", but rather what kind of life is led by most of the people who use pot daily.

People who smoke tobacco daily are almost all addicted to nicotine - despite the 32% above. Nevertheless they all participate in life pretty normally.

Most people who drink daily aren't alcoholics. Most of them seldom get drunk. I'd guess the 15% above is likely to be a reasonable estimate of daily alcohol drinkers who are alcoholics and who suffer as a result (not to mention their families).

But of daily pot smokers, I don't believe its only 10% have serious problems (vs meeting some DSM criteria of dependence). Could the 10% be the proportion of everyone who has ever tried it who "have" to use it every day? I'm guessing that's what it is.
