What I mean is that if we are to influence the issue, we need to stop polarizing between us and them. That plays into the hands of the terrorists. It's not a matter of 'nice', or appeasement, but of backing the right horses and making the right moves. For example: rebuild Afghanistan, and get out of Iraq as soon as possible. Positive steps that will reduce the polarization and thus knock the legs out from under the terrorists.
