We can, and have, shown strength - witness Afghanistan. Where we blew it was by following some dimbulb neocons idea that invasion of Iraq would 'sow the seeds of democracy'.

We have shown military strength in Iraq, yet the Muslims don't respect us. They see failed policies, death, and broken promises.
