KR, every people has the government it deserves. The Iraqis deserved Saddam. People deserve their governments irrespective if they are good or bad on the yes of the outsides.

Germans deserved Hitler, they were not up in arms in the streets demonstrating against or conspiring against him.

Look to Bush's US! It needed to get really bad for the populace to convince itself it is a dead cause.

What the US administration need is to be convinced that the Iraqi people can only be ruled by a Saddam type of government. No other type of government can rule them.

The solution is to put in charge a junta of ex-Saddam military. Give them money, weapons and let them sort the mess. The junta will have a mix of Shiites, Sunnis and even Kurds. They will govern the Iraqis they way they are used. Not democracy. This thing is good only for Sweden, Germany or England. But the US should leave because it is not pretty the way Iraqi will pacified.

But the US has also to talk with the Iranians not to interfere. This can be done by freeing from the embargo planes spares parts for planes (which it is in the process of being done already) and stuff like.

Of course there is no face saving. It is defeat, plain and simple. Or just to drive my point as clear as possible: The US got its ass un-cerimoniously kicked
