Sounds exactly like the situation in 1979 when Reagan/Bush negotiated in secret with the Iranians (while Americans were held hostage there....), behind the back of the American government.

As *PRIVATE CITIZENS* both situations (Kerry & the Reagan/Bush '79 campaign) would have not only violated the Constitution, as you correctly noted, but also *specific* legal bans on private citizens interfering in foreign affairs.
