Here's my Reader's Digest dog story. A neighbor gave us a pure bred German Shepherd pup, age about 6 months and never disciplined. Within 90 days I realized this dog was impossible and I offered him to the Denver Police Canine Corps. The trainer asked why and I said I can't do anything with him and he runs the neighborhood. Cop asked if he could teach me to train the dog, would I keep him? Of course, at that time we had 2 pre-school kids who loved the dog. I said "yes" and spent a full day with the cop and 7 other dogs that had been in training just 2 weeks. Those dogs were working off leash and obeying numerous hand signals. It was like they could speak English. That was late May. By the end of July my dog was a perfect gentleman. Obeyed several hand signals, would "heel" off leash and became the best friend the neighborhood had. The kids loved that dog... so did I. The toughest thing I ever did was the day I had to put him down. That was nearly 40 years ago and I still think of him. A dog that size is dangerous without training. With training they can be a wonderful companion.
