Ted, > Do you know how much your car pollutes the air by just sitting in line at a bank or McDonalds with the engine idling? Do you have any idea how much gas you would save by turning off your engine as you wait?

Actually, I do. I know how to save a little gas here and there. I know how to drive my car in higher gears than what the automatic transmission decides, and I've adopted a lot of the driving habits that help maximize my MPG counter on my trip computer.

I also recycle religiously, knowing that ten aluminum cans that are recycled will save the equivalent of a gallon of gas' worth of energy.

But all of that is just small things. I don't brag about that, because I know that I'm just one guy trying to save a few pennies on fuel. I advocate being a good environmental citizen, but I'm also realistic about just how much of an impact I will have. These are just minor habits that amount to nothing more than environmental awareness and feel-good actions. Maybe that's valuable, but it sure isn't going to change the fact that unless I seriously reduce my standard of living, I'm always going to consume more than my "fair share" of energy compared to the rest of the world.
