Thanksgiving wines: Some of the wines recommended for Thanksgiving are generally horrible with this very complex meal. I can not think of a good match for the ghastly combination of little marshmallows and canned yams. The herbs and spices wreak havoc with many wines. The best wine I've found for Thanksgiving is a high quality sparkling wine or champagne. You can't go wrong. The bright acidity cuts through the fat and doesn't mask the flavors of the meal. Some of the worst combinations I have been sentenced to at Thanksgiving were a too sweet Gerwurtraminer....rose petals and sage...yeccch. A big boozy Cali Zinfandel....I thought I'd pass out from the heat of the alcohol with the turkey. Most at the table felt ill with this combo. Chardonnay.. "You have to be kidding" I thought when confronted with the heavily alcoholic and woody Newton Unfiltered at one meal. Good wines: A fine beaujolais (but not the insipid Nouveau koolaid stuff that gets palmed off here in the US) is a good possibility. A great Pinot Noir can be good with a Thanksgiving dinner spared the greenbean casserole and marshmallow junk. I really prefer to serve the champagne throughout the meal except with dessert. Pumpkin pie defies wine matching. I like a good moscato but orange blossoms and pumpkin are a little,well,icky. Argyle from Oregon and Gloria Ferrer are excellent domestic sparkling wines and a rose sparkler is lovely for Thanksgiving. Money Penny Nice champagne quote for the day: Message 22690144
