Motorola introduces antimicrobial handsets

17/11/2006 by Carla Moore

Mobile device manufacturer Motorola has incorporated AgION antimicrobial into its recently launched i835 and i880 handsets. These handsets join the i870, introduced last year, in Motorola's portfolio of phones that feature AgION's antimicrobial.

The antimicrobial is incorporated into the plastic of the painted surfaces and the keypads of the phones, protecting the phones by inhibiting the growth of micro-organisms such as mould and mildew and resisting odour. The antimicrobial is comprised of naturally occurring silver ions, which are relased to the surface at a slow and steady rate, creating a self-cleaning surface that provides long-term protection from microbes. Silver has been recognized for its antimicrobial properties and has been used to fight microbes in the past.

AgION, a US-based developer of antimicrobial technology, claims that its technology can reduce 99.99 per cent of the number of microbes within a one-hour period. While the AgION antimicrobial helps protect the phone's treated surfaces, it does not protect users against viruses or other germs.
