The only product category pushing the mechanical shrink envelope is cellular phones. A product that is next to someone's ear must be VERY stable. Thus lithium-ion and even nickel hydride will not go away for years, because they have been around for a while and engineers know how to make them safe. Lithium-polymer is pretty new, so people will take a couple of years to completely trust it to the point of actually shipping products with it. There will be some leading-edge products, but lithium-ion is a long ways from being "obsolete" - for that matter, even nickel-hydride is still on the uphill slope of the obsolescence curve.
