The information is incorrect. The maximum link length for single mode fiber is 3 kilometers MINIMUM. I have clients that have successfully tested Gigabit Ethernet over 10 kilometer cable runs.

The cable length limitation comes into play for multi-mode fiber where the max distance is 440 Meters. Many organizations have already designed their cable plants around the lower speed technologies where multimode can traverse 2 kilometer cable runs.

But compared to ATM OC12 Gig Ethernet is still faster, cheaper and less complex. People will run new fiber when their bandwidth needs require it.
