I strongly urge you to either get a copy of IRS Pub 550, Investment Income and Expenses, or else download a copy of same from the irs.gov website and study thoroughly the section on options.

Be aware that it is always possible, although unlikely this year, that contents may be updated somewhat for the 2006 version when it is available.

Edit: Especially if you do your own taxes.
