``We see Netscape remaining the significant player due to its strong brand name recognition and an effective campaign that has
driven all but one competitor out of the marketplace,'' remarks Clay Ryder, Chief Analyst at Zona Research. ``Likewise
Navigator's strong position as the browser of policy is testimony of Netscape's marketing strengths in the commercial space.''

I find this analysis interesting from this point of view: In 8 months Microsoft has been able to pick up 8% market share by giving their browser away against a competitor that charges money. And by bundling it with their operating system, and by spending huge amounts of money on promoting it.

So they spend that kind of money on it, give it away, force it into your system even, and it's still a loser. Appalling. (Although it probably saves me money by keeping Netscape from charging a rational price.)

The original full article is on yahoo business wire today. Probably it should be taken with a grain of salt (the %) because they don't bother to mention that one company charges for its product and the other doesn't, making it look like it's apples and apples being compared. I believe this betrays a subtle downplaying of the fullness of the Netscape victory (still.)

Remember when Microsoft would claim they were dominant in browsers but you couldn't tell it because the original IE had the same signature as Netscape? What happened to that excuse?

In counterpoint, I see that we are going to double the prices of SRAMs because the gov has decided the Japanese were selling them too cheap. Also appalling, because I'm buying a new system and this one will cost me at least 20 bucks ;-) I also heard an ugly rumor about SDRAM going up. Can anybody confirm that one?
