Looks like Moore's Law is working in the solar arena on solar cells. I hope and have every confidence that it will continue until the the average homeowner will find it a no-brainer to install solar panels to offset their electricity bills. I got an estimate from a contractor last year on how much would it cost to put solar panels on my house to completely offset my entire electric bills. They priced it out at $120K, which meant that it would take me close to 30 years to recoup the cost...and that included the estimated increase in the value of my home from that capital upgrade, as well as Federal and State incentives.

So prices have to come down significantly for the average consumer to see the cost benefit. Similar to VOIP. When it became a no-brainer, the service took off. So I'm hoping that sometime after 2010, after silicon commodity stabilizes, then that should help prices for solar cells stabilize, which will drive long term sustainable value to the manufacturers and consumers. Then we'll start to see the magic happen!

I'll be on the front end of that curve. I still have my cost/benefit spreadsheet and I update it every year. When I see I can get a return within 7 years, then I'll pull the trigger.
