Syria and Iraq are to restore diplomatic relations, after a break of more than 20 years.

This is an interesting development. Economically, Syria needs access to Iraqi oil, if only for transit fees.

Secondly, Syria is an Arab state, which suggests that they are recognizing that their true interests lie in siding along ethnic lines against Persian Iran. Yet, Iran possesses control over the only operating ally of Syria in Lebanon representing their interests in confronting Israel, Hizbullah.

It something that I welcome, I think.. if only to drive a wedge between Iran and SCIRI/Badr elements in Iraq.

Thirdly, it opens the door to improved relations between Syria and the US, since Syria has essentially recognized the elected government in Iraq.

But I may be presuming far too much from this reapproachment.
