It is very complicated to be sure....

Syria is some 75% Sunni population but controlled and governed by Assad and his Syrian intelligence groups at home and in Lebanon...

Assad and his groups are Alawai(considered by some to be a Shi'a breakoff sect.)But nevertheless considered by true Shi'a ie Iran to be Non-Muslim.......hence the longlasting and bitter feeling between Syria and Irans Islamic radicals....

IMO the only thing keeping Iran from a total attempt at takeover of Syria is their hatred of Israel and USA...so it fits their present agenda to leave well enough alone although the Iranian presence in Lebanon through Hezbollah irks Syria to no end and causes Assad concern because he considers Lebanon his or Syria's....

very involved and bears watching....

regards
