re: Why can't we have far-seeing leaders who recognize that we can either make a lasting friend of China, or a lasting enemy? We're at that juncture now. Green technologies are a perfect area of common interest, but folks in Washington are still debating whether Global Warming is real...

Not only China, but Europe (way ahead of us) and the rest of the world. By making renewable energy a positive #1 priority, we put our differences on the back burner and focus on common ground rather than contentious issues.

With their efforts on renewable energy and global warming, imagine what a jack ass the Europeans think Bush is. Even without his other "faults".

If there is a "clash of civilizations", it might be ignited by western energy alternatives and conservation. But that would also be the west's key weapon in the "clash". Or energy waste would be our key weakness. A true and rare black and white issue.
