"Some Native Americans chose despair and misery while other chose to rise up and meet the challenge..."

More than half the native population died from diseases brought over from Europe. And then faced dishonest settlers and governments unwilling in every instance to honour any deal if it got in the white mans way. Not to mention ceaseless discrimination. Sure, some escape the oppression. But if most of your family was murdered or died of disease and, let's say your daughter was raped and carrying a white man's child and the situation was the same for all your peers... Sure some might rise above it all, but it's not always a choice to suffer in "despair and misery, when your life is ruined.
