I don't disagree with your immediate assessment -- but we need to stand back and look at the bigger picture if we are going to make any progress at all over the next ten or twenty years. We have very specific interests and reasons for being engaged in the middle east -- they are barely even discusable let alone well understood by the American public. Our policies are not helping to quell violence in the middle east -- on the contrary, we are a major source of fuel for the fire. Americans need to have a hard look in the mirror. Nobody really wants to do this, but until we do we will point a finger at others as the source of the overwhelming tragedy that is the middle east and we will refuse to accept much less reshape our role there. Tactical considerations at this point should not be the main focus.
