Tactical considerations at this point should not be the main focus.

I agree - my point was that our tactical options on the ground in Iraq are narrowing so fast, the wider regional context must inevitably be our focus now. Forget about pacifying Iraq neighborhood by neighborhood and province by province. It didn't work well enough to hold, and there is no light at the end of that tunnel now.

If Maliki manages to cut a deal with both Syria and Iran on his own terms, the US could find itself largely shut out of the whole equation going forward.

The laws of unintended consequences are a bitch sometimes.
