Whether we lead or follow in years to come will depend heavily on the next occupant of the Oval Office. It's hard to imagine anyone getting elected saying they'll do just what GWB did another 4-8 years; but fleshing out new ideas will take some time. I want to hear what McCain has to say beyond the short-term political noise, see if he has a wider vision for the ME. He is obliged to do a lot of me-too-isms to get the nomination. What he says at the convention (assuming he is the main act) will be key.

I think the Democrats are still a long way from coming up with their own vision or deciding who would be best to lead it. That will be a messy process over the next 18 months or so.
