I would not depend on "collective wisdom".

The "collective wisdom" in this case is the mob putting their money where their mouths are and the hedge fund managers using their super computers and "collective wisdom" to arbitrage and straddle anomalies.

I wouldn't bet my life on their wagers, but as one NY sportswriter once said "the race may not always go to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but that is the way you bet".

In any case, the underlying financial underpinnings may be troubling. However, against that there is a case for optimism that you have stated many times. That is, this indeed is a new era. The world is now getting totally connected. The vast majority acting without physical or logical bandwidth (intelligence) will cancel each other out, but there is now opportunity for a whole class of super intelligent human beings who are now able to make a big difference in creating a better world.

There is no reason to forecast a gloom and doom scenario unless of course that you have a realistic strategy to benefit while everyone else is suffering.
