Both of my German Shepherds were "kennel comfortable". We started the first one in the kennel before he was a year old. We just left him there for two nights, then picked him up. We did that 2 or 3 times before we took a vacation and left him for a week. The kennel owner (a friend) told us he got along fine. When I was a kid, we lost a dog because we left him with a neighbor while we took off for several days. Of course, the dog, not understanding what the hell happened to him, went off, probably looking for us. Gone and never saw him again. Sad. We did have one of our Shepherds come home with a bad case of kennel cough. The vet raised hell with the kennel over that. But, all in all, the kennel is the place for dogs when owners go on vacation.
