Again, I'm with you in spirit. At the moment airlines are exempt from Kyoto. Crazy, but they're apparently exempt from most taxes according to the IATTA charter between governments.

I thought it interesting that Branston is suggesting energy saving moves. Mainly, I suspect, to head-off regulation. I was interested in his suggestion of towing airliner to the runways. I've often wondered about that. Jet engines are extremely inefficient at low speeds and low altitude. Taxiing is the extreme of extreme.

Ps. I see Globalstar's new rates are much lower. Last week I bought a 406 MHz emergency beacon that is a cheap and effective rival to a satellite phone when thought of solely as an emergency aid. navcen.uscg.gov. It provides GPS position and a code. The code tells them who I am and what my activities involve, so giving an idea of the likely trouble. This information is available to the Search & Rescue of the country where bought and the country whence the signal emanates. In the case of the US, they contact any foreign country and politely ask what's happening and offer assistance if they have any to offer.

Of course the beacon is no good for just keeping in contact, or for anything less than a serious emergency. For that you need the G phone.
