Yes, Quebec would be stupid to separate. Canadians would have little incentive to learn French or be a bilingual nation supporting French language services if it were not for Quebec. At the same time, Quebec could not go far without English, especially if less Canadians were willing (or forced) to learn French. Mandarin or Spanish are far more important languages than French in the global economy.

I am fond of Canada as a country, but I almost wonder if Canada would be better off broken into self-sufficient regions. When forced to sink or swim, maybe people on the east coast would become more innovative with their industry, Quebec might become less sulking and introverted, and Ontario and Western Canada could concentrate on their own issues without being shackled with demands from the east. If Alberta were a separate country, it would have an economy with recent growth similar to China, ability to pay off its share of Canadian national debt, and with an educational system at the top of the world in terms of standardized testing.
