In your view, "equilibrium" implies a delicate balance that has to be preserved at whatever cost necessary.

That's the wrong way to look at the environment. Instead, the real equilibrium is more like the end result of many different pressures in a system. Increase or decrease one of those pressures, and the equilibrium will shift, but it will still at a habitable level. And of course, the pressures shift constantly, and so does that equilibrium.

Either that, or the end of the Ice Age was due to man burning too many fossil fuels ...
