The point of the original discussion was that the republican party has lost a lot of power in areas that not long ago were considered solidly red. Hey, anytime a democrat gets 70% of the vote in the midwest or Rocky Mountain states, it is worth noting. Ignore it at your peril.

There is a national repudiation going on of the kind of republicanism we have seen for the past six years. The republican party can certainly regroup and recapture much of this area is it will recommit to smaller government, tolerance for difference, balanced budgets (or at least spending restraint), and a common sense foreign policy.

Remember Mr. Delay's brilliant Texas redistricting plan? Well, now the democrats can actually do the same thing in states like New Hampshire, Illinois and Wisconsin. Not a great idea...never was, but the republicans opened the gate.
