I suppose opium plants have produced their chemicals to work perfectly on the right part of brains to eliminate pain. Pain is of course, in the normal course of events, an excellent way of avoiding death. Causing plant eaters to not feel pain would be a good way for a plant to protect itself as the animal/insect wouldn't bother defending itself against painful things which would normally get it to do something different.

One of our daughters chewed into her lip, not realizing what she was doing. I think dentists use a cocaine-based product.

My father had dysentery during WWII [in the desert] and while hospitalized was given morphine. He said it was great. From intense pain to floating on a cloud. He said he could see how people would think it a good thing to do on a regular basis.

I don't know what the difference is between morphine and heroin. I suppose they are the same chemical, but maybe opium plants produce a range of nerve toxins. Google probably knows.
