"There's one thing I'm not going to do, I'm not going to pull our troops off the battlefield before the mission is complete," It is simple. To do that would mean he screwed up. That would be embarrassing. Much better to hang in there and hope that Armageddon comes soon. So what if it gets people killed senselessly? That isn't nearly as bad as taking responsibility for a screw up.
