The other side of the argument goes something like this; most of the middle east that is hostile to us, have strong central governments, with power concentrated in a few and relatively few if any civil liberties. The only places left offering bases of operation relatively risk free of governmental interference(other than remote areas like parts of Pakistan) would be countries without totalitarian strongmen in control, namely Iraq and Afghanistan.

You can bet that whatever passed through Qaddafi's mind that caused his "conversion" was not totally exclusive to him. I would watch for him getting "squeaky" as one early warning signal to expect the fudge to the hit fan domestically.

Any failure to attack our homeland since 9/11 is not from lack of desire. I would argue they have been degraded in leadership and the number of states willing to openly sponsor their activities. Perceived weakness on our part may very well remove roadblocks to more aggressive behavior towards us. Time will tell.
