Iraq's "civil war": A rose by any other name ...

The Ross Report
from The Chronicle Foreign and National Desk

sfgate.com

It's official: Iraq is in a state of civil war.

What has been readily apparent to observers for quite some time now has the imprimatur of NBC.

Reuters, citing analysts, said the TV network's pronouncement "would increase public disillusionment with the U.S. troop presence there."

Perhaps fearing a repeat of Walter Cronkite's tipping-point commentary that the Vietnam War was "unwinnable," the White House rushed to reassure that it was no such thing.

Electric drills. Beheadings. Burning people alive. Executions and death squads online.

One wonders whether "civil war" is too antiseptic or antiquated a phrase, conjuring up images of Cavaliers and Roundheads, when a carnage-filled hell of Bruegelian proportions -- more akin to the Khmer Rouge or Rwanda -- might be more accurate.

What would you call it?
