"Take some ridiculous charges and give it weight. Build up the political pressure. Distract the president from focusing on the war on terrorism and put him on the defensive. Shift the focus from fighting Islamic fundamentalists to petty partisan politics."

Tench, he was under very little pressure. FDR was under a lot more pressure when WWII broke out. There were a lot of Republicans who felt that the Nazis weren't the bad guys, the Soviets were. Likewise, Truman was being challenged at every turn during Korea. There was intense political pressure when he removed MacArthur from command. Or Johnson and Nixon in Vietnam. Yet none of them lost their focus, despite much more intense pressure. Now true, many on the Right blame the media for Vietnam, but that particular die was cast well before the media started to be critical. We had lost control of much of the countryside and were holed in our firebases. It just isn't possible to win under those circumstances.

Bottom line, if Dubya lost focus under the puny pressure he was put under, he shouldn't have been in that job.
