Will,

I've been reluctant to respond as the conversation has moved on however I really would like your thoughts...

I interpreted 'valuable diamonds' as a reflection of stone quality where you apparently meant dollar value, I suppose, relative vs. absolute value.

I believe that an argument of under sampling or rather limited sampling is strengthened rather than diminished by demonstrating that the item in question is actually present in the sampled body.

As for helping Bloomfield's argument, I suppose it does in a way. Hearne obviously contains a lot of very low value diamonds. The flip side of that is that a single 3.4 carat stone, representing a mere 0.14% of the sample carats, provides for about 7% of the total parcel $ value. Even at a very low frequency, stones of this quality will influence the average $/ct far beyond their size. Maybe not to be banked on, but a more than reasonable 'what if'
