Matsushita Announces New DVD Players, Home Theater Systems

TOKYO, JAPAN, 1997 SEP 29 (NB). Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. [TOKYO:6753], better known by its Panasonic brand name, has announced three new DVD -Video players, all aimed at the home theater market. The company is also combining the new players with a variety of other hardware to launch five new home theater systems.

The three new players feature Dolby AC-3 digital surround 5.1 channel sound and a 96kHz 24-bit digital to analog (D/A) converter, the first time in the industry that a 24-bit converter has been used, said Matsushita. Other improvements on the previous players include a 10-bit video D/A converter and virtual surround sound system.

The machines will be available first in Japan, beginning with the DVD -A350 which will launch on November 10 and is priced at 94,000 yen ($776). The DVD -A450 will be launched a month later, on December 10, and carries a 100,000 yen ($825) price tag. The DVD -K500 system, which includes support for special karaoke systems, is due out on November 15 and will be priced at 110,000 yen ($908).

The home theater systems being launched all make use of the new players and range from a 535,000 yen ($4,414) set with 32-inch high-definition (Hi-Vision) television set to a 1,362,000 yen ($11,238) system that includes a 100-inch projection television. All systems include other AV components, such as an amplifier and S-VHS video cassette recorder and are aimed at the high-end market.
