The Dick Van Dyke show quit as a winner too. It's a good strategy. To recognize when you're at your peak and not likely to maintain the same level of professionalism that made you good is humility at its best.

One Far Side cartoon I remember is a cat following a trail of treats that led into an open clothes dryer. A dog standing against the open dryer door, hidden from the cat's view, is saying "Please! Oh, Pleeeeeease!"

The torment that my mother's Siamese cat, Tinker Bell, inflicted on our good-natured Dachshund, Sam, who only ever wanted to be friends with it; but was met only with hissing rebuffs and swats in the face, could have easily snapped one day and turned into that Far Side fiend.
