"The driver, imo, should have known better.
Ah but 'should haves' never seem to resolve much. In our real life situation we have any number of drivers. Wolfowitz for example was wolfully wrong about a number of his assumptions prior to engagement. And here we are entering black ice territory with little ability to apply breaks, let alone shift to reverse.
--as I recall there were bastion-type compounds in Africa, where the UN tried to protect civilians, as well as quick ways to move, feed, and house, fleeing civilian populations efficiently.
If it were exactly similar to this, I might be prone (as the folks over on the 'Death Cult' thread are) to allowing that course to proceed at its own pace, with mutual enemies annialating each other, along with the assistance of some of our launch pads and hardware in the process. Then at least I would have the comfort of knowing that it is none of my business and my loved ones are not directly affected. Those who do harm and have harm done to them are encased in a kettle of their own making.
Even though there are some precedents in Africa, there are some notable differences. The victor in Iraq will have the wealth of the world at their feet. They have superpower technology and alliances available from nearby neighbors. They will have developed a modern and superior fighting force that will attract millions, maybe billions of supporters from various regions of the world. They will be emboldened by whatever extremist agenda they brought to the table, and it seems the recognizable opponents have us as a common predetermined next target. ... maybe not, who knows? |
