I think the housing market is hardest on 'new entrants'. Do you know of any stats on how long most people have owned their homes? More importantly, do you know how long the 'average' American has been in the housing market? It seems to me that this thread is too focused the minority of Americans who 1) speculate, 2) got in recently, and/or 3) are in over their heads. I don't doubt that these three categories add up to a lot of people -- but I don't buy the idea that this characterizes the majority of homes owners.
