Sprint expanding next-gen 3G deployment
Adds new cities to its EV-DO Rev A deployment

November 30, 2006 (Network World) -- Sprint announced Wednesday that it has added two more cities to its list of metropolitan areas where it's rolling out EV-DO Rev A. Sprint's wireless network in Salt Lake City and Sacramento, Calif., have been upgraded to the next-generation technology, which supports upload speeds of 300K to 400Kbit/sec. and download speeds of 450K to 800Kbit/sec.
With this announcement, Sprint now has EV-DO Rev A deployed in 10 markets. The other eight cities are Boston, Buffalo, N.Y., Hartford, Conn., Las Vegas, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, San Diego and Seattle.
EV-DO Rev A is expected to offer users much faster upload speeds compared with current EV-DO Rev 0 services available today from Sprint and Verizon. Most EV-DO services today support upload speeds of 50K to 70Kbps. Rev A promises 250K up to 330Kbit/sec. more throughput.
Download speed improvements are more modest with Rev A offering 50Kto 100Kbit/sec. more throughput.
Verizon Wireless also is rolling out Rev A in a number of cities, but the wireless service provider will not provide any further details at this time.
Sprint says it will have EV-DO Rev A in 21 markets by year-end with services rolling out in 2007. The other cities that are expected to get turned up this year are Baltimore, Denver, Detroit, Kansas City, Mo., Los Angeles, New York, Newark, N..J, Philadelphia, Providence, R.I., San Francisco and Washington.
The wireless service provider says that EV-DO Rev A is better suited for applications such as high-speed video telephony, music on demand, video messaging and large file uploads.
Sprint says it is concentrating its initial EV-DO Rev A upgrades to airports and business districts, but plans to upgrade its entire wireless data network by the end of 2007. |
