Yes, I agree, well said. Unfortunately, this approach has been decried as 'appeasement' and 'coddling', even 'loving' the other side. It's analogous to the issue of law enforcement; yes, enforce the law, catch lawbreakers, punish them, make it harder for them to perform their crimes. At the same time, prepare the soil, so to speak, to grow citizens who will not turn to crime.
Politicians like issues that clearly set them apart from 'the opposition', so are less likely to embrace a multiprong solution. We are told too often that there is only a black-and-white, one-approach-only solution to a given problem. Time for use to acknowledge that 'nuance' is not a bad thing; it allows us to see more than just ones and zeros... |
