Dave, I don't recommend using cliches to formulate investment strategies.

With respect to General Electric, I agree that it is one of America's premier companies. You could do a lot worse than put your money in that firm over the long term.

But to respond to your point, I should note that over the 10 years of 1985-1995, according to FORTUNE magazine, Intel significantly outperformed GE [Intel 28.0% CAGR in total returns to shareholders vs. 18.2% for GE].

My own data shows that shares of Intel have returned in excess of 25% CAGR since the company went public in 1971. Sorry, I don't have comparable data for GE.

Of course, past returns guarantee nothing about future returns and you can't invest in the past.
