MEXICO: Felipe Calderon was sworn in as president of Mexico a second time in the Mexican Congress, despite protests by legislators from the opposition Democratic Revolution Party. Accompanied by outgoing President Vicente Fox, Calderon briefly appeared on the podium, which has been the site of fistfights and sit-ins since Nov. 28, before departing.

CHINA: Some 1,000 villagers protesting land seizures in the Chinese village of Xichong in Guangdong province took two hostages and surrounded a village committee building, Radio Free Asia reported. The villagers are demanding a better price for the land they said they were forced to sell to developers. The wife of the former village committee secretary and the son of the head of the shareholder's association were taken hostage.

MEXICO: Defeated Mexican presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador led a march toward the National Auditorium. About 5,000 Lopez Obrador supporters protested President Felipe Calderon's inauguration ceremony. However, the number of protesters fell far short of Nov. 30 predictions, which estimated that 100,000 people would participate.<<
