This could be major. Something for the new Democratic congress to consider: Re-enacting the Fairness Doctrine for broadcasting. The Fairness Doctrine required broadcasters to regularly provide contrasting points of view on issues important to the nation and the community. When Reagan’s people at the FCC succeeded in getting rid of it in the ‘80’s the right wing was primed and ready. Radio became a haven for right wing talk shows. Rush Limbaugh’s daily diatribes would not exist if the Fairness Doctrine were in effect, because stations wouldn’t want to have to broadcast, say two hours of Al Franken, for every two hours they gave to Limbaugh’s program. The vast majority of AM radio stations today broadcast ONLY right wing opinions daily. This is ridiculous and harmful to the country.

Congress had second thoughts and voted to restore the Fairness Doctrine and put it back into law in 1987 but Reagan vetoed that, and there were insufficient votes to override the veto. Congress tried again during the administration of George H.W. Bush, but this time Bush vetoed it.

The powerful broadcasting lobby wants to keep the Fairness Doctrine dead. Too inconvenient, they say, to have to provide balanced opinions.
With the takeover of much of the airwaves by right wing corporations, the nation needs the Fairness Doctrine re-instated. A great project for the new Democratic congress. Let’s see if this Bush has the guts to veto it again.....
