Pete,
You can get a 21" CRT for $115 that does 2048x1536 at 85hz.
Used one on EBay? I see only one on newegg for $369. newegg.com
Besides, with consoles, that cost is zero, because people already have TVs.
That is a far higher resolution than the standard 1366x768 of most 16:9 HDTV LCDs.
Most of the old ones are like that, and IMO, everyone who bought one of those needs to have his head examined.
There are a bunch of new 1900x1080p on the market, and within a year will replace the fake HD ones (with 1366x768 resolution).
A simple discrete GPU card like a 7600GT or a X1600XT either with 256MB of GDDR3 for under $100 will allow good gaming performance at these high resolutions.
... I paid $130 for my ATSC/NTSC tuner PCI card, but I get a dozen DTV/HDTV channels plus a dozen NTSC ones.
Well, the costs start to add up.
Decent PVR software is available like the MythTV I use under Linux. So I do get a gaming box, a PVR, a media server, a tuner and a PC all rolled into one.
As does complexity.
I think you are missing the point that the consoles are mainly for idiots and kids. They are marketed that way. PCs are not idiot proof, they are not marketed that way, therefore consoles were able co claim such a huge portion of the gaming market.
Joe
PS: If Sony is basically handing people $300 check with their $500 consoles, BOM being probably in $600 to $700 range, it makes a tough competitor vs. PC, which is sold to make profit on hardware. |
