In Nam, there was a mutually threatening external force - North Vietnam. In Iraq, there just isn't any existential threat that is a source of mutual interest. The Shiites know they hold the keys to the kingdom. A point may come when certain elements feel they are strong enough to take it and weather the storm of civil war that follows. I think that point is pretty close.

I changed my mind. We should have offed Sadr.
