SEC Postpones Hedge Fund Discussion
Posted by Mike Gibb on Dec 04 2006 05:38:31 PST

A public meeting at the offices of the Securities and Exchange Commission is still scheduled for today, but the agency on Friday removed a pair of items related to hedge funds from the agenda, claiming more time is needed to study the issue.

The SEC was opening up for discussion a proposed regulation that would raise the net worth standards for hedge fund investors and another measure that would aim to stop hedge fund fraud.

Investors would need to be worth at least $2 million, excluding real estate, and maintain an annual salary of at least $200,000 in order to invest in hedge funds. Currently, investors need a net worth of $1 million to qualify.

Another public meeting has been scheduled for December 13, but the SEC has not indicated if the hedge fund items will be added to that session's agenda.
