My gut tells me there was never any equipment, but I'm at pains to figure out a motive. Remember, Gino signed his own name on the cheque. The risk (jail time for fraud) reward (a kickback from PV) was not worth it. BTW, I'm now having a hard time figuring out how someone so bumbling could have made a fake version of a cheque that fooled the bank. Why not just steal a new blank cheque from the cheque register?

How about these longshots:

1. PV tells Gino he has this piece of equipment he needs to unload at a ridiculously low price. He swears it's not stolen. Gino knows he can turn around and sell it for lots more money immediately. PV says if he doesn't hurry he'll sell it to another guy. The quickest route was to fake a cheque. PV then screws him over since there is no equipment. Gino is now between a rock and a hard place and is thus powerless to go after PV so brother Frank steps in and declares the cheque a fraud but won't press charges.

2. Gino tries to screw over PV by giving him a fake cheque that he'll cancel before it clears. Jokes on him since the trustee account is at his bank and the cheque clears immediately. As in scenario 1, brother Frank steps in and declares the cheque a fraud but won't press charges.
