The major "stealing" was done when the French imported by the Normans, the Viking descendents who invaded the British Isles, started eventually mixing into the Anglo Saxon dialects, which got to the isles from Germany.
Interesting how few people know that England was a dual language society for more than 300 years.

And thus how few people know how easy it is to pick up French with an English language background. Yes, of course, that pronunciation...
