The botched joke incident was a special case. It wasn't about Kerry, it was all about the Bush White House focusing their entire propaganda machine on John's blown joke for those two days, as desperate as the White House was with no issues to run on. And if Kerry got into a public debate with them that it could have hurt Dems. That's why John cancelled apperances, because the press would have been trying to get him to defend himself, and he had promised Dems he would never stand by and take those kind of smears ever again, he would strike back.

If the White House wants to make an issue out of anything, no matter how ridiculous, they can. And when Tony Snow tells Kerry to apologize for a botched joke 16 times in 2 days, then you know what they are trying to do. But it didn't work. In fact I think it backfired on the White House.

Kerry is no more "finished" that anyone else who's ever lost an election. In fact, he has been "finished" in the eyes of the pundits several times before and has always come back strong and won. In the end, it all comes down to a field of candidates and who is best qualified to win and serve as president. One thing about Kerry, he has already been vetted in political battle. And the same old smears will never work against him aain.
