NASCAR has lost its roots
NASCAR ignoring ‘traditional’ fans by Reader
For the past 27 years, I have been a loyal and enthusiastic NASCAR fan. I raised my family in the infield of the Daytona track and was raising my grandchildren there as well. No more. NASCAR has decided they can do without the “traditional” fan, or worse, they can just take those fans for granted. I have purchased sponsors’ products because they support NASCAR. Now, I really do not care.
For the past few years, we have seen the disdain that NASCAR holds for the traditional fan. This disdain increased with Bill France Jr. NASCAR and Brian France want to broaden their base away from the “traditional” fan. For example, NASCAR sponsored the movie “Talladega Nights,” while the Hendrick Motorsports organization did not, because the movie did not represent family values. Family values were once the core of NASCAR, but now it wants to favor alternative lifestyles. Now, NASCAR has chosen to go with Sirius Satellite Radio, the home of one trash-mouth, immoral Howard Stern. When Stern came to Sirius, my family canceled all our Sirius subscriptions and went to family-friendly XM.
What Brian France does not understand is the traditional fans are raising the next generation of NASCAR fans, our grandchildren. Now that we are no longer welcome, we are not going to the track, nor are we watching the races on TV. You can only kick your base for so long before they go to a friendlier climate, the NFL. |
